Ivan Marchuk is perhaps the most famous Ukrainian artist of our time. His works are valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars, and his creative legacy includes thousands of masterpieces.
It was a long road – persecution by the Soviet authorities, years of emigration, and finally the long-awaited return home. Along the way, he invented the technique of “Plontanism” and changed the recognition of Ukrainian art abroad. Everyone knows his multifaceted paintings. Not everyone has heard about the period of creation of ceramic works in the 60s and 70s of the last century. After serving in the Soviet army, Ivan Marchuk continued his studies at the Department of Ceramics at the Lviv Institute of Applied Arts. And after it ended, he worked with clay for some time. This part of creative works has a general name – “small ceramics”.
We digitized one such work with an independent gallery «Blue Velvet Underground». On the initiative of the founder of this gallery, Borys Hryshkevych, Ivan Marchuk’s original ceramics became available digitally. It was presented for the first time from December 2023 to May 2024 at the exhibition of Ivan Marchuk’s works “Known Unknown” at the National Museum “Kyiv Art Gallery”. The exhibition was one of the most visited in the museum in the last period. Thousands of people viewed the works and had the opportunity to understand the creative works.
To see is one thing, but to consider every detail and even the reverse of the work is quite another. Our 3D model was in demand. Anyone who wanted to was able to appreciate the craftsmanship of the work in full right on their phone. By simply scanning the QR code on the stand. This added interactivity to the exhibition itself and brought it to life.
Preserved in the digital world, the work of a famous artist is now available for analysis without physical contact and to a much larger audience of art lovers.
