Everyone has seen the Lyad Gate on the Maidan, but could you imagine what it looked like in reality? As part of the work with the city cultural and tourist hub Kyiv Digital, our specialists recreated the gate of the 12th century on the basis of historical reconstructions, schemes and plans – Lyad Gate in 3D.

Lyad Gate is a historical monument of Kyiv, which served as the south-eastern entrance to the princely part of the city. It was located on the site of the modern Independence Square. The gate was part of the defensive structures erected by Yaroslav the Wise in the 30s of the 11th century, and had strategic importance, because the way to Klov and Pechersk Monastery passed through it.

The name of the gate comes from the word “lyada”, which means a forest clearing. The building, built of wood, was rebuilt several times. Later, it was named Pecherska, and in the 1760s it was replaced by a stone gate, the remains of which are still preserved today.

In 2001, the Lyad Gate was recreated not far from its original location, decorated with the figure of Archangel Michael, a symbol of Kyiv. The remains of the foundation of the ancient Cave Gate are also exhibited near them.

And now a plaque has been installed on the historical monument with the possibility to see its original appearance in augmented reality.

Right in the center of the capital, you can come and see real history. To do this, you only need to scan the QR code and the Lyad Gate will appear next to you through the smartphone screen.
