A Ukrainian wedding is something everyone should attend. However, this is not always possible. We decided to visit the Ivan Gonchar museum and digitize the national festive dress so that any of you could see what brides looked like in the 19th and 20th centuries.
What have we digitized?
In total, we digitized 6 costumes worn by residents of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, Chernihiv region, Poltava region, and Cherkasy region on holidays. The “pearl” of the collection is a wedding dress from the Myrhorod district of the Poltava region. Unmarried Ukrainian women of this ethnographic region wore a shirt, a sheet, a belt, a corset, and jewelry for the holidays, which reflect the traditions and crafts of the masters of that time. The shirt, embroidered with frills and cutouts, together with the “star” sheet and the brocade spare part, creates a unique image.
The uniqueness of this outfit lies in the small details and the use of traditional crafts passed down from generation to generation. The refinement and craftsmanship of jewelry that complement the image make this costume an unforgettable symbol of Ukrainian culture and history.
Why is this important?
Digitized samples of the national festive dress will help to preserve and pass on the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine to the next generations, as well as to study and appreciate the majestic level of craftsmanship of our ancestors.
The project was implemented with the assistance of “Kyiv Digital” as part of the museums’ digitization and the development of the cultural and tourist hub.
